Obviously it would be best for you to have the originals while making the display case, but short of that -
With steady hands and a sharp pencil these could be traced onto paper and then that mailed to you with a picture of each. No measuring needed by him, which could be miscommunicated. Perhaps he can also note for you if he has a desired order of these coins for the display.

I received the challenge coins from my Dad.  A total of 33 of various diameters and shapes.  He did mention he wanted it tiered and it's going to sit on his desk or a shelf at work.  I think this will give me an excuse to visit my local hardwood supplier to pick up some Walnut and whatever else inspires me.

sounds like a grooved strip of wood with a slight angle, would be better than cutting holes for each one since they are of different diameters.
