You need to consider getting one of the Uxcell 800grit diamond discs from amazon..I could not be more pleased with how well it cuts...Sharpening HSS is like butta to it...I bought the 3,000 grit last week but I am not as enthused with it as I am the 800...The speed of the Veritas MKII is perfect at 760RPM..Any faster would be too fast...

I'm impressed with their build quality, Son...nice thick aluminum plate that is very flat, and the diamond is disbursed evenly across the face...a little oil on it prevents loading..I was thinking that it would make a good disc for stropping if leather was glued to it...or even use diamond paste on one side, sandpaper on the other once the diamond has worn away.
...Another nice thing is you can use the disc for sharpening carbide cutting bits...

I fixed up a spiffy Stanley #5 for a friend, basically restored it. Put a great edge on it and it was ready for anything. A couple months later I wandered into his shop and picked up that plane. It looked much worse than yours, looked like he had try to shave his driveway. I asked him what he did with it. He used it to trim the bottom of his garage door. I didn’t offer to sharpen it again.

Really....you should see some of the irons I have had to rehab over the years.....ever see a "Reverse Camber"? Quite a few have a wave effct going on, like this ~....Some think the chipbreaker will do the cutting....imagine what that looked like..
Show me a picture, I'll build a project from that

Actually, a #5 is about what I'd reach for to trim a large door, but I'd clean the door of grit first and resharpen when done.
People either learn to care for tools or they do without.
