R and K are advance and retract codes.

Any more info on those codes?

Oh, I don't have one of those special poison sucker outers, sorry.

On the R and K codes that example was an unorthodox example of the usage. Typically in drilling the R would be used as an advance to the work and start drilling, K is used as a short retract not to the surface but to break the shaving only the start drilling again. On deeper holes you would retract to the surface to clear shaving the using R advance into the hole and start drilling again. These to moves are done at the machines rapid traverse rate, often 400 IPM or more. Scares even an experience operator sometimes.
Yes

They have other uses also. In circular interpolation, i.e. corner rounding, full circles, etc. R would specify the radius to be cut. K is often used with the I and J values. Again K is an advance command, I and J are values specified in radians that are used by the computer to calculate the required moves as in cutting a thread on a CNC milling machine.

Without getting too far into the weeds... G83 and let it peck to the bottom is the way to do this. Using G81 would be overly complicated.

Well there are options. Instead of peck drilling you could set up a gun drill. You'd have to carefully select the caliber of the drill in order to get the hole made in one pass. Could be anything from .22 copper plated to a 30mm depleted uranium drill.

.45 is the obvious choice for the caliber

Oh, I didn't know. Why is it the obvious choice?
