This morning over coffee I was thinking this would be the best solution. I've become suspicious of the reviews complaining about breaking the mallet handles. When I assembled it I noticed that a hand tighten brings the grain perpendicular to the head and that's asking for trouble like hitting a baseball with a wooden bat, seal forward. I made certain to tighten the handles so the grain was parallel to the mallet head.
First thing my grandson did was take a mallet and ball and give it a good whack across the living room. At nine years old I'd of done the same thing.

Croquet Mallets don't have to be round. Someone showed up with a mallet like this at an annual camp out I attend and it was amazing.

Make it out of some hard wood like Ipe and you will be the envy of the court that only has the 'ccr@ppy' mallets usually found in sets.

The picture on the directions showed a square head mallet. I see a mallet like linked for $350 and am reminded of an old thread about some wooden blocks designed to elevate audio wires and cables off the ground and thereby increase fidelity through something or other. They were 2" squares of 4/4 with a notch in them, made of birch and only $60 ea.
