Big family the Salicaceae, includes many types of willow - and cottonwood.

Also the true poplars, not that masquerading magnolia.
Better to follow the leader than the pack. Less to step in.

Thank you Michael. Since my sample has the grey color wood near the bark, I am now convinced this is cottonwood. (Many online photos show it has the grey)
I like the light brownish Heartwood. It's grain is clear and very nice and straight. Looks good in a bowl.
