The more I look at it, the more I think it would look better with the vertical trim pieces than without.

Remember that whatever you do is not going to be visible except from a distance. Anybody that gets on their hands and knees for a close look deserves what they get.

Have you thought about how you would fasten it? Glue might work at the top piece of plywood, but I'm not siure I'd trust it on the bottom painted piece (unless you remove the paint). You might want to use some brads (and glue) to keep it in place.

I think edge gluing will be OK for holding the piece in place.  A 3/4" thick piece of plywood has 3/8" of face grain at any given point.  So it should glue up well enough.


A light duty  ratchet strap (about $15.00 at Home depot) would clamp this nicely.  I agree that finish nails will be needed to hold this in place so it does not slide around.  Alternatively he can drive very small finish nails into the edge of the plywood and trim off the heads so that only about 1/8" remains proud of the surface.  As he would clamp it tight the brads would sink into the surface of the material and keep it from sliding around. I've used this method often and it works well.
