Refinishing Oak kitchen cabinets, no i don't want to paint them!

What I did was, take off all the doors and drawer fronts, and threw them away. Then bought large sheets of veneer (oak) and put it on with contact cement. Then made new doors and drawer fronts out of oak. I used bead board for panels. It is a lot of work, and contact cement does have some bad fumes, but sure turned out nice. Stain and finish they way you want. We used early american stain, and I made wipe-on poly.

Any of you guys have pics of what color options would be available with what i assume is white oak?

Seems other than painted, choices were always golden or dark brown... anyone that did this come up with some other colors?

My son wanted to redo his maple kitchen.

I referred him to Raw Doors for the cabinet doors and drawer fronts, and to Rockler for their face frame veneer.

He finished all the new maple with Waterlox.

It came out beautiful.

Most factory oak cabinets were/are red oak.  Regardless, as I mentioned before, you can make them any color you want with dye and/or stain.  If you want a cherry color you can have a cherry color.  Practice on the back of a drawer front until you get the color and process you like.
