I've never seen an oil based version of Seal Coat. If such a thing exists, it may not be a true shellac. Zinnser Seal Coat is an alcohol based, de-waxed shellac.

I'll have to call around to local hardware stores. The nearest Menards is in Wichita KS, probably 3 to 4 hours away.

Is this wax-free? I've seen some say so right on the can. But this one doesn't.

My guess is that the "oil based" shellac is simply shellac with the natural wax, which works fine under most oil-based finishes but not under water-based ones.

That Lowes link has shown up before in other threads...it is in error. Read the description, it says shellac based. If it was oil based the drying time would be, well, much longer.
I started with absolutely nothing. Now, thanks to years of hard work, careful planning, and perseverance, I find I still have most of it left.

Lowes has a picture that you can rotate. If you look on the back of the can it says clean up with denatured alcohol. It is alcohol based. The question then comes is it dewaxed? I don't think they dewax the clear only the seal coat.

It's always been my understanding that Zinsser Seal Coat is de-waxed shellac and that Zinsser Bulls Eye shellac (both clear and amber) contains wax.
If you are going down a river at 2 mph and your canoe loses a wheel, how much pancake mix would you need to shingle your roof?

No it it not. Only the can labeled "SealCoat" will be wax-free.

Um not "oil based". This is their regular amber shellac. Has some wax. Works fine as a top coat and while I've gotten away with using it under other finishes, it isn't recommended. Perhaps not stirring and pouring off the top meant I was using nearly-wax-free.
Interestingly, the aerosol with the same label color scheme, does appear to be wax-free. I swear the label on the aerosol used to say wax-free but it doesn't to any more.

On the can label itself "Bulls-Eye Shellac is not recommended for use as a sealer under polyurethane. When sealing wood under polyurethane finishes, use Bulls-Eye SealCoat."
It is not oil based as it says to use alcohol or ammonia for clean up on the can. I believe it was Lowes that said it was oil based and to use mineral spirits to clean up which is wrong. Yes it has wax. Roly
