I happen to have a very well equipped tool and machine shop to serve my manufacturing plant, along with a toolmaker and a machinist (with several more that think they’re machinists), yet I do not have all of my tools flattened. I have a couple, namely a MF smoother and a #3 Bailey, though there might be a few more that I’ve forgotten about. It really takes skill to do the job correctly! Done right, you’ll have .001” shavings all day long, but, is the smoother the most used?

I seem to rely more on a Jack plane...See-through shavings are fine, for those who wish to just show off....otherwise, they take way too long to get a job done.

Nowhere in my response to Mr. AHill do I tell anyone what to do. I do, however, appreciate the respect you've shown me by using my formal title. |
