1st Project for 2024?
#19
The blade in the New Combo Square...is 16" long...and is marked in both Imperial and Metric.   Top of my bench is also 16" wide, counting the tool well.

Errands to run, today....Boss is being taken to Fazoli's for a Birthday Lunch by our Daughter.....after that?    Will have to see how Lunch settles...

Panel trimming might happen, later?   And, instead of trying to set the clock face panel into grooves...will be doing "Slips" all around...with a few spots of glue to hold the panel in place...

Need to bevel the top edges of the Base...

And add the feet   case to be attached to the base with a couple "Glue & Screw Blocks"  ...

Think either a 7' X7" squares for the front,  or 7" x 9" rectangle....will see what the grain looks like in Panel #6, first...

Top of the case will also use the glue blocks....( go and look around inside those older Grandfather Clocks, sometime..)

Info on that Combo Square..

Means I now have a 6", a 12", and a 16" versions....YMMV, Of course...

Base is now beveled on the "show face" at 15 degrees..left a flat field, too..

Front panel has been trimmed for size..

Door panel has been trimmed bit...pending fitting in place..

Kind of plain?   Have not decided on a "Jamb" size for it....hinges and a latch...

Side panels were ripped for width...as they will be sitting here..that "extra" bit along the edge?

Is called a slip...

And will be a "picture frame" around the clock face...and also where the front panel will be glued to...

Means I had to miter a few ends..

And, since the Langdons don't do well with small pieces like this....a smaller Mitre Box was used...saw is a D8 Panel saw..20", 10ppi..

Glued the slip to each of the side panels..

This was a bit fussy to clamp up, WITH the caul to protect the outside wood...so panel #2..

These worked just as well....need to work on me grip, now...

Mitre Box needed a way to get secured to the Bench..so..

2 screws, counter sunk below the surface...no glue used...

Will try to make the glue blocks tomorrow...need to allow for the front and back panels...

Trying to decide IF the "jamb" for the Battery door should have mitered corners..or, just 2 strips down each side....Hmm...

BTW: there is no Printed Plan in use..unless you count the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up...but, it's "printer" doesn't work, at the moment..

Stay tuned..

There have been times when I could use a 16" combo for a particular job.

Was in use, today..BTW...

Something easy to use, to find the center of this panel..

Reads either Imperial or Metric...

Was going to use this drill to cut a 3" diameter hole  ..

Scored a line, and that was it...so..

Center hole then curve towards the "ring" and follow that

Craftsman 13" Tilting Table, Direct Drive...( $10 at a yard sale long ago..)

Slips needed a touch up?

Then a few "Glue Blocks" were milled and glued in place..

Each with a counter sunk pilot hole..

Ran out of these style clamps...so..

The last 2 got c clamps..

Camera started with a LOW BATTERY ALARM,,,So I had to stop for the day.

Stay tuned..

Camera Battery is charged back up...and it is a new battery, too boot....
Clock Dry fits this evening...checking to see IF the clock fits the hole..

Seems to..snapped right in place...
Brought out the base, both sides and the top ( with the finial)

Still needs the top and bottom slips cut and installed...feet for the base...corner details around the front...

Something looked a bit...off, though..
So...I resized the top, as it was a bit too wide in the beam...then re-beveled it..

Looks a bit better?   WAS about 1" sticking out the back of the case...now...about 3/8", maybe?

Trying to track down some 1" long screws ( 4)  to attach the base, sides, and top together,,,with the dial face in place, of course....have a lot of sanding and planing and even a #80 Scraper to put to work..

Then I can decide on that door build....
Just hope nobody knocks this over..

Maybe by next Friday, I can decide on a finish?

Assembly is completed...time for a "Naked PIP"?

Back is no longer a door...just a panel screwed in place without glue...in case I do need to open the back up..for some reason..

Details, details..

Fancy feet to stand on..and corner brackets

Side view?

Install the clock back in place, with a battery installed..

And, keeping time quite well, thank you very much...

Just got back from buying a few brushes...so that later there MIGHT be a Finished" Post...

Stay tuned...

Ok..after a coat of Witch's Brew Stain..

Then a coat of Amber Shellac...

And then a second coat..

All 3 rubbed down with 0000 Steel wool...then a coat of Minwax "Warm Gloss" was brushed on and allowed to dry..

Moving day was last night...and today was a Photo Shoot, of sorts..

Side view...and..

The Finale.   Keeping perfect time, thank you very much...

Thanks for looking in!

Well done Bandit. No question, one of your best small projects. Thanks for taking us along.
If you continue to cut corners, you'll end up going in circles!

It's my thumb so I'll hit it if I want to!
