Is there anything special about the Rockler Drop Leaf hinges? Do the big box stores have an equivalent?

1.) NO and 2.) NO (at least I've never seen them in a box store). There are other sources however, you might even find some on Amazon. The last set I bought came from Woodworker's Hardware.
I started with absolutely nothing. Now, thanks to years of hard work, careful planning, and perseverance, I find I still have most of it left.

I have gotten cheap crap ordering these hinges from Amazon. I second Woodworkers Hardware.

You may also want to try Lee Valley and Woodcraft - both of whom sell table leaf hinges.
