115V to 230V Capacitor Advice

I have a Jet 18" BS Stock no. 708750B and converted to 230V.  Was unable to find wiring diagram for my stock number so...using a diagram of another model with 1 1/2 hp, I installed a 21 to 25MDF capacitor; it would not start the motor.  The wiring diagram for a 1 3/4 hp called for a 40MFD; it starts the motor but slowly.  A friend, who mentored me through the conversion, was certain I was damaging the motor.  What say ye, the WN brain trust?  Do I need a different capacitor?

Does the motor have a centrifugal start switch on the end of it, under a vented cover?

If that is the click at start up and the wind down, then yes.  I learned that yesterday.

Look on Amazon for a capacitor that is rated in the 400 mfd range at 125vac that  Stwood found at ereplacements , much cheaper.   Check the dimensions to make sure it fits.  The 25 and 40 mfd units are run capacitors.   The mfd range should be in the 400 range but not necessary to be exact.  Roly

Yes, correct on the cheaper.
But he now has the correct specs for what his saw uses.

Thank you, Roly and Steve, for the information...but:   Apparently, I was not clear.  I am converting to 230V.

  The 400MFD is for 125V and is the one I removed.   The 40 MFD, I installed, is a Start Capacitor.

   I did make a typing error.  The correction:  A friend, who mentored me through the conversion, was certain I was not damaging the motor.

Recap: 21-25 MFD 220/250V Start Capacitor would not start the motor.  36-43 MFD 220/250V Start Capacitor starts the motor slowly.

Do I need a different Start Capacitor?

Bill, a good description of capacitor voltage ratings for dual 110/220v motors can be found at https://woodgears.ca/motors/voltage.html. Why are you changing the capacitance for the start cap? The original cap should be fine.

Larry, I will be resawing mesquite slabs to almost the full capacity of the saw, in this case 9.75".  In the past, 6" was a slow process.  One person wants several book-matched veneers, and I need furniture grade material.  Mesquite mills pretty easy, but I wanted all the power I can get out of the 1.5hp motor.
