Tools are curved, means only one point on the surface of even a flat stone can be tangent. Rest means nothing.

Now, lapping a planar surface, flat comes in handy.
Better to follow the leader than the pack. Less to step in.

Around 1500 Leonardo Da Vinci designed a continuous rotation lathe. Seems like all earlier lathes were reciprocating like this one, some with one pedal and a spring pole and others with a bow wrapped spindle.
