I want to add a 2nd wall switch next to the existing one. This is an interior wall with good access to the top of the wall studs. Is there a preferred way to remove the single box, install a double without making a huge hole in the dry wall?

There will be more knowledgeable answers, but I'm getting ready to do this as well (mine will be a 3 gang box). I intend to cut the nails on the existing box, remove it...enlarge the hole and put an "old work" box in. It will be interesting to see the alternatives offered.
I started with absolutely nothing. Now, thanks to years of hard work, careful planning, and perseverance, I find I still have most of it left.

It's not just the old box to remove and a new larger one going back in, it's getting the existing wires into the new box along with more wire(s) being added for the new circuit(s).
I'm pretty good with sheet rock repairs and would just make it easy on myself (enlarge the hole and repair it)
