I thought Lee Valley had a free plan on their web site, but now I can't find it?

Here 'tis -

I like the idea of a shave horse combined with a low bench.

And another set of plans here-

And some ideas from Oz-

If you do a Google search on “lee valley shaving horse plans” (remove the quotes) the second item is a link to the PDF.

Hmm. Looks like LV is selling the plans, but they're available 'through the back door' from Veritas's site. Wonder if that's a boo-boo, or if it's on purpose.

Just a story here on shave horses: I needed to make a couple of repro shave horses (of a Shaker original) when I worked at Hancock Shaker Village. Made two in about 28 hours, but needed help holding pieces to use a (machine) morticing bit. Okay- the next year I needed 2 more, but had a year's experience by then- all by myself and NO machines, they came in at 14 hours. Just goes to show, hand tools ROCK!

Thanks for all the plans. While looking at them I remember seeing one that could be attached to a work bench. Anyone out there know of one like that.

I see tractor seats go at auctions quite often. Usually they bring fairly good prices here in Iowa. Of coarse my idea of price might be different from someone else's.

If interested PM me and we will see what I can do.

Ah, the Shave Pony.

Here is a link to a page on the subject:
http://www.frontiernet.net/~dmatt/shavepony/

And from that, I built this one:

No tractor seat needed here, just a stool (pun ) from IKEA:

Locks into the face vice here, sits on two pins into dog holes on the front apron. Not moving anywhere!:

Works great!

Check out the smart head design that Peter Galbert made on his Chair Notes blog. I'm thinking of making that one soon.

I made one a few months ago. The design has its shortcomings. I plan on scrapping the Smarthead and switching back to a regular ole dumbhead, but I haven't gotten around to it.
