Snapped a Packard badged gouge about where it was resting on the toolrest 15 years or so ago. The two sections spanned a hole I could only describe as a bubble in the steel. Instant replacement, no requirement to return.

Don't be squeamish, it's a fluke, though it looks like the wife was cutting with the left flute facing up when the metal failed on that one. Tell her to swing the gouge so the bottom of flute is more parallel to the surface (c versus (u. Keeps stress where the shape makes the gouge strongest, not on a thin, weak ground back wing, where the original defect was, in my estimation.
Better to follow the leader than the pack. Less to step in.
