Has anybody installed one between their motor and blower? Real estate wise that would make much more sense for me but I've never seen anybody do it...and I'm thinking there's probably a reason for that!

Anybody done it? Would it work?

yes it would work and yes it has been done. I would expect a small amount of velocity loss;  not enough to render it useless

if that is the way you need to do it I would say go for it.
