Have been gone a while and just moved to Ventura County, California area (Thousand Oaks) and finished building the new shop. Looking for a good hardwood supplier in the area - this was so much easier in San Diego. Thanks for any ideas.

How far are you willing to drive? Best place by consensus is Bonhoff Lumber in Vernon. It's all rough-sawn lumber, but they have the best prices, and they let you pick through their piles. You have to ask the yard supervisor and he'll get a forklift operator to get some lumber down and then you go at it. They'll plane it for you for an additional price. Super nice folks.
Another place worth checking out, but a much longer drive for you, is Austin Hardwoods in Santa Ana (Orange County). They have all indoor storage the size of a Sam's Club of just about anything you need, including veneered ply, BB, finishes, mouldings, etc. More expensive, but still WAY less than lumber prices at Woodcraft or Rockler. There's a Woodcraft in Ventura on the coast. One of the better Woodcrafts, IMO. They have a decent selection of bowl blanks and fairly knowledgeable staff.
You are not so far away from almond groves farther north. Ask around, and you can pick up some good almond wood for cheap. Very, very sappy when green, so you have to let it dry for a several months before milling it. My first experience with almond wood ruined a bandsaw blade because of the sap. Almond wood has a similar look to red oak, but tighter grain.
Still Learning,
