Red Oak, I Should Have Known Better
#15
Yes, there are many Red Oak species and some of them are only good for firewood. However, while Northern Red Oak is generally considered the best, Southern Red Oak and especially Cherry Bark Oak make prime lumber.

The only place for red oak in my house is in the woodstove.

The original post was about burning during a router operation. Having done quite a bit of router work on red oak along with many many table saw, jointer, and planer operations.  I do get some burning with dull tools.  I'm sorry you have not had the pleasure of working with the high quality red oak that is commonly available in my area at reasonable prices.

I was once asked by a saw mill where my red oak came from in MN. I said Anoka County, he said worthless.
