Storm window inserts
#11
Hi,
I need to replace some missing storm window and screen inserts on large white storm windows.  The glass and screen are not a problem, and I found sources online for the corners, and latches, but I'm don't think I've found the right frame material.  Unfortunately I don't have a picture, but these are the common storm windows/screens that slide in the two or three track frames with the spring latches on the bottom.  Does anyone know a source for the insert frames?  Thanks!

Did I not ask the right question, did I not ask it in the right way, or does no one have an answer?
Thanks for any help,

My answer is go to a glass shop and see what they can do.

I've had to fix some oddball stuff and couldn't find parts. The glass shop found the  parts and charged me through the nose but he did get the right stuff.

try your local glass supplier.

it is sort of highly specialized material and mostly supplied to dealers through wholesalers.

If you really want to DIY it Try http://www.allaboutdoors.com/Products/Window-Parts-Hardware

you will have to do some serious digging or call them

Do you know what brand the windows are ? Have you gone to a hardware store to see if they have replacement windows that will fit ? Buying replacements may be cheaper than building your own. Roly

Back in the day when I worked for one of the Borgs, we would change storm window suppliers as soon as somebody came in and gave us a better price. It was very hard to find parts. We typically tried to get them to replace the whole storm window. The storm window market is almost gone now with multi pane windows being the norm.

Try Do It Best,  here is a  LINK    .     As you can see on the page their are several different shapes that they carry which is probably a small percentage of what is out there.   Suggest measuring the existing ones and find something that will fit.   roly

Thanks to all for your suggestions.  I will follow up on the links and other possibilities.  The storm windows are large, with some of the panes being 44" square and others 30" square.  They are on our new, old house and we'll be restoring the old windows.  It's in a historic district, so they will want us to keep the old windows if possible.  Since the storm windows are already there, I figured I should work on making them all operational.

Thanks again,  I appreciate your help.

Pedro, thanks for the bump and I hope the information helped you as well.

I live in a historic district, too (but my house is new, but made to look historic to blend in).  Anyway, our city has a historic commission and the people that sit on it are very knowledgeable about finding resources like this.  So are my neighbors who have done a lot of their own renovations.  It might be worth talking with them, too.
