I never had a spring clamp shift when using a guide like in the OP.  In this case, part of the guide is under the saw.  I have had clamps shift when clamping a straight edge as a fence only.  Stability is something to be aware of, so you do make a great point.
I tried not believing.  That did not work, so now I just believe
