I use a branding iron also, usually on the inside of an apron, or underneath some other surface.  A friend gave me the iron as a gift, after finding a document with my signature and sending the signature off to the branding iron company to duplicate as the iron.  I probably wouldn't have done it otherwise, but I've been glad to have it.

I use a branding iron on larger pieces and pencil on smaller ones. I always varnish over my pencil marks.
