FS: Metallic Plane Company Filletster or fillester
#2

This plane is an extremely rare Metallic Plane Company Filletster, made sometime between 1867-1880. It is identical to the tool shown on page 176 in the book "Patented Transitional and Metallic Planes in America 1827-1927" by Roger K. Smith (known as PTMPIA vol. 1).

This example has all of its correct components, though the condition is not as good as the one shown in Smith's book. The fence with its intricate scrollwork is in perfect condition, as is the depth stop and nicker blade. Both have the original screws. The wooden knob is also in excellent condition with no cracks or chips (it does have a small spot of paint). The iron appears to be original, except that it does not have the wording "Excelsior Cutter Metallic Plane Co." stamped into it. Either it is an unmarked factory iron or a very well made replacement. The screw and washer that secure the iron are original.

Now for the negatives: The cast iron loop to the left of the iron broke off long ago. The body was solidly repaired with a steel strap and screws. The rear handle is missing both horns. Previous owner's initials are stamped in the side of the body and in the wooden handle.

This plane has considerable collector value even in its current condition. Similar planes have been listed numerous times in Clarence Blanchard's "Warman's Tools Field Guides" with values as high as $3850. This one can serve as a placeholder in your collection until a better example comes along or the components can be used to replace the ones missing from your plane.

Asking $900 for this plane. PM me if interested. PayPal preferred, but will consider other forms of payment.
