Is it necessary to have a drawer slide on the top as well? I wanted to keep the hardware hidden and know how to do that for the bottom slides but not sure how to hide the top one. Suggestions?

I usually put a ball bearing slide top and bottom.
My next one, for my own kitchen, I'm thinking of putting them on the side, top and bottom.

Need more info. What is the orientation, size, and expected load? You say a mouthful just saying spice rack. A pic of your destination would give you the best answers

I prefer the under cabinet pull down rack for spices. You can get a complete spice rack at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Kitchen-...spice+rack You could make your own if you find the hinges
these are pretty pricey for hinges, https://www.thehardwarehut.com/catalog-p...ref=182416 , but I didn't see any at Rockler or Woodcraft. Since most spices don't like heat, try to keep the rack away from the oven.

This doesn't answer you question but I find this spice storage to be the most convenient. It's what I use in my kitchen.
