Just curious what every one uses to hold their work while carving. Some what out of my realm, but looking at taking a basic class, so I need to devise something basic. Thanks in advance.

What are you going to carve? Flat panels are certainly different requirements that carving something in the round. Can you give us more info?

I use the Veritas for "in the round" but double sided tape (see Mary May) for relief type carvings. Stuck to a plywood board and held to bench via bench dog and vise, hold down, C clamp or whatever. Small caricature type I just hold in my lap.

If you are chip carving, or really small objects, it's not uncommon to use your hand. I would recommend one of those kevlar and steel gloves.

Handscrew held upright in a bench vise can work in a pinch.

Just a guess, really, but most likely relief/ flat panels. I like the idea of 2 way tape on plywood for the flats. Bang a hold down in and move on. :
Taking a local class with Boris Khechoyan { Hopefully I spelled that one correctly }. :

Ha. Wouldn't an Ebony black panther be cool?
But, no, not really. Although the suggestion has been made and an offer to carve them as well. I thought I was ahead in the race against time, then realized I am actually several laps behind. :

I know you said flat panels but here is a vise you can make from plumbing parts.
