Captive Ring Tool Question

I picked up some cheap turning chisel on auctions. I ground them flat and square. I then drilled them to the  size I wanted in one corner of the flat then ground the hole so it was in the form of a C so to speak.  If they got dull I used my file for the chainsaw to touch them back up.

I usually start the groove with the skew and usually a little oversize.
