Well, even high-quality electrolytics die after a while.  So caps are always a good guess when a 20 y.o. piece of electronics dies.
If mine dies, I am going to try to cut the lid off of the module.  But usually they fill the modules with epoxy, and that makes a cap replacement into a pretty big job. I assume someone would have reported success fixing these modules, $130 for a replacement makes it worth it
