Similar wood species
#3
I'm looking for wood with similar species like Abies, walnut and Oak. Is there any database that can help me? I'm looking for wood with similar species in several Malaysian company because these company don't have mentioned wood. Actually I need a database that grouped similar woods and I can replace unavailable wood with similar wood.

My guess is that you will have to build your own database based on those characteristics that are most important to you for similarity. Do you want similar based on color? strength? hardness? working characteristics? grain? price?

Some of this information is available by studying the US Forest Product Laboratory's data sheets, for example for US domestic hardwoods :

Similar pages exist for softwoods and some tropicals.

One problem I foresee is this: there are many oak species and naturally many are much like the others, but if you want a non-oak that is much like oak, say honey locust or kentucky coffee bean, then you are getting correct answers but finding woods much more difficult to source since they are not often commercially available.

Without much effort I also found this:    http://www.wood-database.com
