I bought an older Disston panel saw yesterday. It's got a skew back and is 26" long, 22" at the tooth line. It's filed 5tpi rip. But it has no etching on the saw plate that I can find. (There was some light rust that I sanded off with 400 sandpaper.) Is that unusual? All my other Disston hand saws have etchings.

It's possible for them to be so faint that you can't see them anymore. It happens quite a bit.
It's also possible, but less likely IMO, that someone just replaced the Medallion.

Pictures would make a lot of sense, given your inquiry.
