FS: Planes -- Rockford R5, Stanley No. 4 Type 18
#2
Not common, but not considered rare, is this Rockford R5 corrugated plane. It is a high quality plane made by the Rockford Tool Company between 1915 and 1924. They were easily equal in quality to Stanley products. So much so that Stanley bought the company in 1924 and continued to produce planes at that location.

This plane has been lightly cleaned. The japanning is original and in good condition. The shiny parts are excellent, as is the iron which has been sharpened and honed to a hair-shaving edge. The tote and knob may or may not be original, but are solid. The Rockford planes came with hardwood handles and that is what they are.

This will make a great user for someone. It does a nice job making thin shavings on hard maple.

Shipping: I generally ship the same day or the next business day after receiving payment. I always compare the cost/service time between USPS, UPS, and Fedex to get the best price. There is never a charge for handling or packing, unless there is an unusual amount of effort required (like shipping a delicate item internationally).

Wow, I hope to look this good when I'm 70 years old.

This is a Stanley No. 4 Type 18 smoothing plane, made in 1946-1947. It is about as new as a septuagenarian can be. The Japanning is nearly perfect and very glossy. The iron still had its original factory grind. It had been used a couple of times, so it was treated to a sharpening/honing that will now shave hairs. It does a great job on hard maple.

The nickel plated lever cap isn't just shiny, it GLEAMS.

The only "flaws" are a couple of small chips in the black lacquer on the hardwood tote and knob, along with a few dark spots on the sole. There is no pitting or other damage on the body, which is one of the heavy castings left over from wartime production. These beefy planes make great users due to their extra mass.
