Dead Blow Hammers
#15
Not a true deadblow but certainly works just like one. This is a Greene and Tweed BASA hammer that I recently made new hickory faces for. It packs quite a whallop.

Jim, I've got a similar one but different maker.  Was just an empty shell when I got it and I just stuffed it with a rolled up old belt like a rawhide mallet but a little softer.  Still persuades pretty good without denting.

Mine is more like the one discussed here: http://2makers.weebly.com/no-1-basa-hammer.html
I'd never looked to see about replacement faces but looks like they are available from McMaster along with several other DIY options related to original post.

Any of them go poof if you strike something sharp, being plastic with something akin to shotgun pellets inside they aren't heavy duty slammers, but for tapping wood joints together without blowing up joints they are awesome.

Agree about HF being as good as any you'll find. I suggest the black 1 pounders, near perfect.
Worst thing they can do is cook ya and eat ya
