Also depends how dry your wood is. 

If it's air dried to only 12%, and you might expect it to drop to 6% seasonally, then you are going to have a lot of shrinkage. If it's kiln dried to ~7%, and you then put it outside, it's only likely to expand and the gap get bigger. 

If you aren't sure, leave a 1/8" gap, and it will be fine.
