I know among other things I'm a heretic, but if you have a 6x48 belt sander, I've had good luck with mine. side to side, flip, side to side. One plane, one 80grit belt.

I've been having at it on a friend's sanding machine with a very flat platen.  It's been enormously helpful, if unorthodox.  I'm 90% toward flat.  But, it's been Global Warming all day and all night here for the past few days, so work in the shop has been impossible.  Hope to post some pictures when I'm done.   Thanks for everyone's advice.  Glad I decided to keep the plane and tackle its deficiencies.
