asphalt driveway cracks
#6
A neighbor melts asphalt chips [that are used to patch holes] and then carefully pours the liquid into cracks [he uses compressed air to clean the crack first].  He said the technique doesn't last forever but it lasts longer than caulk.  Have any of you tried this technique in cold climates?

Our village has been doing it on our streets this summer/fall. They have a commercial unit, but same principle.

It does work & lasts for years, been 15 years since it was done last.

Interesting stuff asphalt. I used to help maintain a black topped 22 mile bicycle path that frequently would develop cracks. The path was used for roller-blades too, so even a small crack was bad news. We had a unit that would actually melt the asphalt around the crack (picture a 4'x6' BBQ grill turned upside down) Once the asphalt is hot enough, you can add a little extra material that we kept in a 'hot box', rake it out smooth, tamp it down and vibra-pack it, and no more crack. The only down side is asphalt loses what little elasticity it has when it's heated (and as it ages), but they do make oil based additives to replace that. A long was of saying, I think your neighbor is on the right track!

Sounds like a lot of work. I've had good luck with Henry products.

Hot crack filler works the best, but you need a way to heat the filler.

I have used the cold asphalt in home depot, worked rather well for a 1" crack across the whole driveway.
