wooden plow

i was given a plow by sil that she bought at estate sale. the depth stop is very tight in its mortice and the brass plate that the thumb screw goes through cracked in half. i have a piece of 3/16 brass to make a new one would you file the depth stop or widen the mortice so that wont happen again.  thanks jerry
