I have a small dust collector, but no separator. I've tried to use it to collect lathe shavings, but they just plug the screen over the impeller. I then tried the Thien separator with it some years back but apparently did something wrong because the chips never fell out of the air stream. At some point I'm going to rig a filter box for it that takes the HVAC type filters, or possibly figure out how to engineer a shop vac filter and use it instead of the shop vac when I'm sanding. it will grab more than the shop vac does.

I use a trash can separator like this inline with my dust collector

Me too, but it can't handle wads of shavings through the hose. 

   

Dust, it works on.

   

NOTHING but two open hands can corral some stuff. 

   
Better to follow the leader than the pack. Less to step in.
