I used melamine laminate over particle board. Cheap and readily available. You can write on the board and mark start/stop locations and then wipe clean. The material being worked slides easily over the melamine.
Cheap enough to replace if I even need to.
No animals were injured or killed in the production of this post.

Thanks so much for the information. I plan on using high pressure laminate to laminate on the top and ege with hardwood. Probably use ply for the fence. I was planning to use Norm's router table.

MDO for mine. Shellacked the paper facings to make them slick and durable.
Better to follow the leader than the pack. Less to step in.

I'd never use MDF. I have 1-1/4" MDO for mine. Much stiffer than MDF, even doubled.
Cellulose runs through my veins!
