Need a really good respirator

Back story: week plus battle with pneumonia hopefully coming to an end soon

I have not been really good about wearing a mask, but this wake up call will change that. I have a mask that I wear when I spray paint, but I want something that I can wear almost all of the time- at least during dusty operations

Cost is not much of an issue- comfort and effectiveness are

Go to an environmental health and safety place and have someone fit you for it (I had this done through work once when getting Hazwoper certification). The suppliers typically have several different brands of masks you can try, and they will spray some nasty fumes in your face to make sure you have a good fit.

The 3m half masks with the pink filters are pretty good for me nikising dust inhalation. But the powered, full-mask respirators are the way to go if you need more protection (eyes?).

You’ll also want to think about the dust you pick up on your clothing and dust in the shop even when you aren’t working.

Both points above are important to remember. A mask only works well if it fits you properly. When I had a day job we were required to have the respirators on our person at all times on the factory floor. Once a year we did a fit test to make sure we were still using the correct size mask. (Side note, they 1/2 masks don't work if you have facial hair.) There are several good brands available (I always used a North or a 3M) pick on where you can get replacement filters easily. Also the better ones will have different types of filters available...you need filters rated to remove organic vapors for finishing, then switch to dust filters (if you want) for shop work.
I started with absolutely nothing. Now, thanks to years of hard work, careful planning, and perseverance, I find I still have most of it left.

If you have facial hair and are concerned about dust, here you go:

I've had one about two years and still using original filters.

I've been using it for 4 years now in the shop and in house reno, but here's what I had to say about it in 2014

I picked up an Elipse P100 today at Woodcraft after my old respirator just died of old age.  I only wish my old one died long ago as this one fits really well and I don't have any dust in my nose after 3 hours making dust.

I also have had this for several years.  Purchased from LeeValley when they have there free shipping. Works really well.
