I've been there before and won't mess with it- the patches rarely worked for long. Gas spills/leaks ignite and you get burned- not worth it.

yea.. but

Those tanks are usually polyethylene. Not much sticks to it. I'd probably try welding it with a soldering iron. Polyethylene will melt. That's how polyethylene gas pipes are joined together.
