Sucks it up like nobody's business.  When you do your test pieces, add a bit of compatible vehicle to "thin" the pigmentation.  I went to dye, but pigment staining is possible.
Better to follow the leader than the pack. Less to step in.

Well, that is the LAST time I will use aspen for anything other than secondary (maybe not even that) wood. While the stained shelf turned out pretty good, the small painted table was a PITA.
