When using a double square for laying out dimensions on a project it is good practice to cover the dumb end of the blade with masking tape. Otherwise one gets practice plugging miscut mortises.

Darn, that's one mistake I haven't discovered (yet).
I started with absolutely nothing. Now, thanks to years of hard work, careful planning, and perseverance, I find I still have most of it left.

Could ya just magic marker one side of the square at topside, say....black.
No sticky tape residue to clean off.

I’ve done that. That’s why my now favorite small square is a 4” combo.
