Reusable dust mask
#11
Hello all,

I can't remember if I had asked this question before a while ago, so if this is a repeat my apologies.

I think I'm getting a bit more sensitive to dust.  Especially my current project working with exotics I want to get a better reusable dust mask.

I would like something that is resuable, comfortable, and doesn't fog my glasses.

I've used the Dust Bee Gone face mask but it does still fog my glasses and I'd like to see if I can get better filtration than the 3 micron  that it offers.

Any suggestions?
Peter

I posted this thread a while back, regarding RZ Masks.

May be some pertinent info in there.

I've been looking at the RZ masks also.

Bonus they don't look so goofy either.

I'm going to be trying one of these:

I've tried it very briefly.  Some of the reviews indicate saliva is a problem, so I don't know how well it will work for me, I guess time will tell.

I can't imagine not being able to breath through my nose though while woodworking.. would seem rather uncomfortable.

I'm still looking for the holy grail of a way to protect my lungs, ears and eyes without fogging up..

I actually picked up one of these last week before doing some heavy sanding. It works pretty well. I took out the supplied combined carbon filter and put in a regular 1 micron filter. I was pretty impressed. Once you get the fit right it's pretty comfortable and hasn't been an issue with fogging the glasses. I got mine at Rockler and they had a free 3 pack of replacement filters too. Got it in flourescent green so I can find it in the shop.

I imagine it would be in the form of a full-face shield with filtered powered ventilation.

I have one of these in the way with some particulate filters.  It may be a bit overkill, but I'm planning on using it just for very dusty things or things like hand routing where dust collection doesn't work.  I've found that the worst for me is plywood sawdust.  I know there's more in there than just wood, so even more motivation to protect my lungs.

I also recently got a Jet ambient air filter, but I haven't used it too much yet.  I previously had one of the shop-vac ones with a 14x14 furnace filter bungeed to the front of it.  It worked, but I wanted to get something a little better and with speed control/timer.  I also use a dust collector with a Wynn filter.

I have used a 3m 7500 face mask wth p100 fllters for years. It is actually rated for "As long as your mask fits properly a P100 filter will block 99.9% of particles .3 microns or larger"

You can also get filters for spraying lacquer.

This looks interesting but I haven't tried one yet-

Facial hair screws me up with any of these masks, thus I have to go this route.

It works incredibly well, and you can get either particulate filters OR organic cartridges for spraying. Not cheap, nor light for that matter, but darn effective.

For my turning work, especially when working with exotics that have sensitization properties (where your reaction grows more severe over time to them... ala cocobolo or other rosewoods) it's indispensable.
