Source for Figured Walnut
#7
Hello!

I am in need of a figured piece of walnut and looking at online suppliers. What online wood supplier would you recommend? I would like to start with a piece near 2" thick, 8" wide, and about 18-20" long.

Thank you!

Andy

If you want to see and touch before buying--there was a guy with a private mill out toward Battleground/West Lafayette a few years ago. He posted in the Materials section of Craigslist a bit. I never made it down, but he had some top-notch lumber. I've not been seeking in a while, i'd guess he's likely still around. A wee bit of a drive and you could get to Hickory & Oak in Decatur, MI as well. http://www.hickoryandoak.com Steve is a "hobby" sawyer with a great selection of Michigan hardwoods. He's usually there on Saturdays. No vested interest other than supporting a small independent shop. I also was at Johnson's Workbench in South Bend last Saturday, and they had some beautiful walnut slabs--i'd not say spectacular though.

Andy,

Dunlap Woodcrafts (http://dunlapwoodcrafts.com/lumber) in Chantilly VA, about 30 miles from D.C., specializes in high end gunstocks. They also sell lumber. I bought some really nice figured maple from them several years ago. While I was there, I admired their figured walnut, but I wasn't in the market for walnut at the time. They will sell in small quantities, so they might suit your needs. Call them, tell them what you're looking for and ask what they have on hand. They are very knowledgeable and helpful over the phone.

I bought some really nice wide figured walnut from Hearne Hardwoods in Oxford PA (https://www.hearnehardwoods.com) a year or so ago for a desk I'm building. I have dealt with Hearne for a number of years and have found them to be very helpful and easy to deal with.

I think I would just "harvest" it from one of these places:  [Image: 2012-Rolls-Royce-Phantom-Luxury-i01-1024.jpg]
