You are lucky just to even have such an annual show. I agree it is a shame that the judges are enamored with veneer work at the expense of other aspects of fine woodworking. Who are the judges? Do they have score sheets where they rate different aspects of a piece or is it all just overall impression? Judging at these types of affairs in my experience can be overly casual.
No matter what about judging and judges you must realize that showing a piece annually is a privilege most of us just do not have.
