Looking to buy pen turning tools and kits. Any recommendations on tool brands and vendors. I would rather buy now cry now instead of buying lower end stuff. Thanks.

I don't have any dedicated pen turning tools. I just use spindle or bowl gouges, skew and scraper. I bought some at Craft Supply USA and Lee Valley. Packard is another source. I have some P&N, Henry Taylor, Sorby and Hamlet.

Kits I've purchased from Berea Hardwoods and Craft Supply USA. Been disappointed with Penn State and quit buying from them about 20 years ago. Maybe they produce decent kits now. Buying low end kits (<$8) is a good way to cut your teeth and gain experience before you start buying higher end kits.

Craft Supplies USA
https://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/ They sell tools & pen kit & supplies. Could not find their platings 101 on their site and not sure if still give free catalogs, my older catalog has it. Not sure if still offer discount on tools if buy more than one, but do ask.

Packard Woodworks PSI (Pen State) reseller of kits & pen supplies but also has all your brand name tools. Ask for their free catalog they do offer discounts if buy more thanone tool at a time.

I too am big fan of Berea Hardwoods for kits & supplies, not sure if they still have a catalog or still have special sale price on some kits.

Have a look at kit platings just nice to know info:

Mostly only use two tools for pens Skew & roughing gouge maybe a parting tool if need a tenon. Today lot of folks like carbide tools and guess okay if make your own. Just think get more banks for tool bucks using conventional turning tools over carbide cutters.
