Box joints. But really, maybe forgoing a discrete bed is the way to go. But if a bed is to be used, maybe thicker pieces. I'll +1 to the suggestion of more rounded corners.

Some trucks will have no body, some will be a "pickup" body, and some will have a taller "stakebody" box. For the "stakebody" thicker wood makes sense, probably 3/8" thick. Until I see what the group needs for the kids the total mount I'll be making of one design is totally up in the air.

A 1/8 x 1/8 reinforcement piece, glued underneath the bed. Extend the sides about 1/8" lower than the truck bed to do this. You see that kind of reinforcement on tables and chairs a lot. Since you're painting it, you might want to consider pin nailing or brad nailing them prior to gluing.
