Have a raised ranch with a half-bath on the lower level. The toilet in the half-bath is lowest plumbing fixture in the house. Above the half-bath there is a full-bath on the main level. When the tub on the main floor is emptied, the toilet on the lower level gurgles loudly. After the gurgling, the water level in the toilet is very low. What would cause this?

What EightFingers said, sounds like a clogged vent and when you drain the tub it's trying to get air and pulling on the toilet trap.

If it is a clogged vent (sounds like the problem) there're DIY fixes you can Google that include ladders to the roof and using a hose to flush out the blockages. Me.....I don't like roofs very much.

Have to admit, there is no way I am going on the roof ... never mind with a hose. However, if I know what needs to be done I have a better chance of getting the right person to help me. Thank you.

First of all:
Have you made the required 3 trips to the plumbing store yet?
You can even make the trips before you begin your diagnosis....saves time later
