Stress!

I had that happen to a piece of hickory.   But toward the blade.  HIckory is HARD!  It bit the blade and stopped it dead.  I had to use a hand saw to cut a relief cut on the side to get it off the blade.  Quite impressive how much stress can be bottle up in the lumber.

My BIL had a building supply for a while.

Got tired of folks asking for "a cheap 2x4" so he bought a bundle of "cheap" boards.  Carefully cut straps with long cutters and stood well clear as the boards took off in several directions.

Got his money's worth out of it by hanging one of the boards over the sales counter.  That board did a full twist and spin, sorta like an airplane doing a barrel roll.

Whenever anyone asked for a "cheap 2x" he would point at it and tell them they could have it cheap.
