I can see how those issues could sour your view of the planer. The grinding noise on shut-down would concern and bother me as well. A 110 volt universal motorĀ planer is an amp hog. If your power and extension cords areĀ up to snuff and your knives are reasonably sharp then you need an industrial machine for your planer style. Going to another 110 volt universal powered planer will probably end up with more disappointment. Good luck with whatever you do.
