When my employer decided to re-carpet my office, I got to choose the color.  I picked the color that best matched black coffee to better hide spills.  I found that relaxing.

Reds and yellows are not relaxing.

Blues and greens are relaxing.

Emerald green also hides dirt well, but it is not an on-trend color currently.  Mint green walls have a larger calming effect than does the green floors.

However the most calming color is the one that makes your wife happiest.  But note that the idea of white carpet is more attractive than ownership of white carpet.  It will get dirty and often.  Shampooing makes it worse as the shampoo residue seems to be a dirt magnet.  It looks great in magazines, but much less so in your home.

If you need a carpet just because it is dirty then I would recommend you to not wasting your time and just repair it.

If you're a psycho, orange or purple carpet will relax you.

If you're a golfer or outdoors type, green will sooth you.

If you have kids or animals, you'll be relaxed if you have brown or black carpet.

If you're a mass murderer or nut case, stick with red to blend in and relax.

 If you like to see plumbers and electricians and HVAC guys sweat it out and go nuts, get white carpet.

There is a color for everyone.
